Fujimi Scale Model Airplanes

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

If you take a look at the long list of manufacturers in the scale model business then you’ll probably notice that they’re located all over the world, with adequate representation for most continents. In Asia, this representation is made by a hand full of companies, included in which is Fujimi.

This company has been in operation for over two decades, making plastic model kits for cars, military, ships and aircraft. It must be said here that the most extensive product range is for cars. These are without a doubt made of the finest quality, however they’re not as popular in the western markets and especially the US where model cars are of the Detroit kind.

Fujimi stepped up its operational role in this field in the 1980s to compete with the west. Since then it’s gained enough of a reputation for it to be a well-trusted name in the business.

The most popular Fujimi scale model airplanes include the following: the Messerschmitt Bf1 10C/D, the F86-F USAF MiG Killer Korea, the A-4M Skyhawk Tomcats and the E-2C Hawkeyes 2000 VAW-115, to name a few.

The Messerschmitt Bf1 10C/D is available in scales ranging from 1/40 to 1/49. It consists of plastic bits and pieces that are remarkably detailed. This model is aimed at individuals at 10 years and above.

The most popular helicopter model by Fujimi is the CH-46E/F USMC Tiger Sea Knight. Made to the 1/72 scale, this plastic model kit boasts rotors than are capable of rotating, landing gear that look just like the real thing and also has a very well detailed cockpit. Again, this kit is meant for kids that are 10 years and older. They will receive a guide that walks them through the assembly process when they order the kit.

There are rarely ever any complaints about the model kits themselves or any of the parts they include. Those who’ve experienced problems have found that they’re resolved pretty quickly.

Altogether, there are 16 Fujimi scale model airplanes available as of today. Their aircraft range has been growing but at a slightly slower pace compared to their own car model range.

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Eduard is a well known brand name in the market when it comes to scale models. This brand has been in the business since 1989, making it a company with over two decades of experience in this field. Eduard is a Czech company formed in Most, where it operated out of a “rented cellar.” At the time, the company was into the making of components for brass scale models.

Eduard Model Accessories spent four years making components and found great success, prompting them to expand and get into the making of plastic models. This happened in the year 1993. They began working on creating a range of plastic kits along with photoetch detail sets.

Within the next 13 years, they managed to create a product line ranging over 30 kits made from plastic along with over 800 photoetch detail sets. It’s in the latter field that they’ve become household names across the globe. The products had begun to see worldwide distribution by then.

On the scale model airplane front, Eduard has created kits that range from the WWI era right up to current times. Among those they’ve manufactured, the most popular include the P-40, the Fw 190 fighter planes and the P-39. Also gaining vast popularity was the Dassault Mirage III. Eduard scale model airplanes in the WWI category consist of eleven aircraft kits, all in the 1/48 scale. These include the Bristol F2B, the Fokker D.VII, the Nieuport Ni16, the Roland CII German BiPlane, etc.

If you’re looking for bigger Eduard scale model airplanes then check out the ones they have in 1/72 scale. These include both regular plastic kits as well as limited editions. From the WWI era, the limited editions kits include the Nieuport Ni 17 BiPlane Fighter Dual Combo, the Spad XIII Early Version Aircraft Dual Combo, the Nieuport Ni23 BiPlane Fighter Dual Combo and the Flyboys: Fokker Dr I BiPlane.

Revell Scale Model Airplanes

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

As the title indicates, Revell is one of the most esteemed brands in the field of scale model airplanes. Even a novice in this field of interest recognizes Revell when he/she comes across it. This is no wonder considering how far back Revell goes.

It was way back in 1943 that Revell was created by two men named Lou Glaser and Jacque Fresco. The company started to make scale plastic models of railroads, a market it entered into in 1960. It made several good models of railroads as well as buildings and cars.

A Subsidiary company of the same name was created in Germany in the year 1956. By the 1970s, this subsidiary began to create independent lines that were then imported to the US. They became very popular and became synonymous with quality.

Revel continued to create models without being wildly successful until the mid 1980s. In 1986, it was purchased by a Odyessy Partners who had also recently purchased another name in the scale model business – Monogram, a rival of Revell. Odyessy merged the two companies – Revell and Monogram – to create a single company situated in Northbrook, Illinois.

The name Revell was retained mainly because of its wide recognition. The Revell brand offers historic models, jet models, helicopter models, big scale models and others. Included in the historic collection are the Dornier Do335 Arrow, B-25J Mitchell Gun Nose, P-39 Airacobra, B-24D Liberator, etc., all of which are offered in the 1/48 scale.

Revell scale model airplanes under the jet category include the EA-6A Wild Weasel, F-84G Thunderjet, Su-25 Frogfoot, F-14D Tomcat, etc. Helicopter models include the Sikorsky CH -54A Skycrane and the AH-64 Apache Heli.

Less than four years ago in September 2006, Revell’s German subsidiary, officially separated, letting go of their brand name and taking on the name GmbH & Co. KG (Inc). At the time it did this, the subsidiary was earning more than Revell-Monogram LLC.

Almost six months later, Revell-Monogram LLC was acquired by Hobbico Inc. Their latest offering to the customers (this month) is the above mentioned Sikorsky CH-54A Skycrane. Revell scale model airplanes released in December include the MiG 21PF.

Airbus Model Airplanes

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Airbus – the very name of the company has such a history and one that’s very existence is owed to the American aviation industry and its advances that left competition way behind. If you’re acquainted with the history of the aviation industry you’ll notice the gap in terms of years between the starting of Boeing and Airbus! Naturally, you’ll want to own at least one Airbus Model Airplane in your collection.

While Boeing was ready with its first model, the 247, in 1933, it wasn’t until 1970 that Airbus was formally created. This creation was a result of at least three years of planning between the governments of UK, France and Germany. This historical and unprecedented occurrence took place on the 18th of December, 1970.

The first ever result of this collaboration was the A300. The aim before the actual work began was to be able to create a passenger aircraft capable of carrying over 100 passengers, transporting them over short distances at a low cost.

The A300 was therefore built with a “widebody” and twin-engines (General Electric’s CF6-50). The use of American made engines caused Britain to quit the collaboration. The A300 made its first air flight two years later in 1972. It took two more years before the commercial model called the A300B2 was launched. In 1975, this model was replaced by the A300B4.

Altogether 81 aircrafts of this sort were made throughout the 1970s though they were pretty slow at capturing the market. Airbus only began to be taken seriously in the year 1981, after it launched the A320. There were in excess of 400 orders to fulfill before Airbus even began manufacturing the A320. Compare this with their premier aircraft, the A300, which had a mere 15 orders, and you’ll get the picture.

As a collector, you’ll find it easier to buy the A320 or A321 off the internet. The A300 is virtually unfound but then you don’t have to take my word for it. There are several manufacturers whom you can contact for a custom Airbus Model Airplane.

The design differences between the A300 and the A320 or A321 are virtually minimal.

Boeing Model Airplanes

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

No discussion on aviation history would be complete without a nod to one of the most long-standing and well-known names in the business – Boeing! If you enjoy the hobby of collecting or building model airplanes, then there’s no doubt that you’re familiar with this giant in the field. You probably have a few of these models already gracing your collection. And from among these, there’s probably even that one Boeing model airplane that you consider your absolute favorite?

The starting point for collectors of Boeing airplane models will always be the Boeing 247, the first modern airplane built for passengers in the year 1933. The prototype took its first flight on the 8th of February, 1933 and began to be used commercially a few months later. This aircraft broke records in terms of speed, safety and even ease of flying.

The Boeing 247 was a historical plane to have been built and flown and is known today for becoming the prototype for all the modern airliners. It incorporated a number of changes in its build and design. These came in the form of the anodized aluminum body, landing machinery capable of retracting, cantilevered wings, etc. Add to this such innovations as autopilot and the capacity to fly on only one engine (though it was a twin engine aircraft and the first one to be made, at that).

So much safer was this model from all other existing passenger aircraft at that time that Boeing immediately went on to occupy the top position in the industry. What contributed to this was the manufacturing of sixty airplanes by Boeing, all for its own brand.

The Boeing 247 was the fastest aircraft of that time beating even the Boeing P-12, which was the United States’ top fighter plane. It could make the trip between New York and Los Angeles in about twelve and a half hours – a good seven and a half hours lesser than other commercial airliners.

This Boding model airplane is of course pretty easily available in the scale of 1/48. You’ll want to check out the other details involved before you settle on the brand to buy.

WWII Model Airplanes

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Creating a collection of model airplanes from a specific era can be both easy and difficult. The difficult part comes first and depending on how well you handle it, the rest could relatively speaking, feel like a piece of cake.

The first difficult stage, I’m referring to, is the one in which you make all the decisions. I’m sure you’re not interested in a collection that’s random and consists of a model or two from a variety of different eras and a bunch of different countries.

An organized collector will work towards creating a complete collection by deciding on the era he finds most fascinating and the country who’s military aircraft history he wants to recreate. The decisions don’t stop here however!

Say you’ve chosen the United States of America and you want to recreate the World War II model airplanes’ history. Well, you’ll still want to decide if you’re going to be looking at the aircraft used by the US Airforce, Navy, Army or the Marine Corps!

Let’s say you decide to settle for those built for and used by the US Airforce, you’ll want to read up about or research all you can to find out everything you can about the models. Once you’ve got your list created, then begins the easy part…well, relatively speaking!

The easy phase consists of searching for, locating and purchasing the World War II model airplanes on your list. There are several manufacturers that you could check out, but if you’ve got a favorite brand that you trust for their quality and service then it should be easier still.

While you might be lucky enough to find some of the models and buy them readymade, you’ll probably have to custom order a few. There’s of course the possibility that you enjoy building the models yourself in which case the search will have to be focused on manufacturers and brands that sell kits of the specific models you’re looking for.

Luckily, there are brands from around the world to choose from. There are also individuals with a web presence who’ve devoted the life to this hobby and can help you.

Military Model Airplanes

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

military model airplaneIf you’re into the collection or building of military model airplanes, you’ll have already found that there are several manufacturers that cater to your wants. Each of them either specialize in the creation of custom military aircraft models or in the manufacture of kits that you can purchase and put together yourself.

But, I’m thinking about the novices in this field. How do they go about deciding on which model to look for or buy next? What are the criteria that should be taken in to consideration? Well, here’s a short list of three criteria that I’ve created that will undoubtedly help you identify the next model with ease:

1. Country: If you’re trying to recreate military history by means of your collection then the smartest place to start is the name of the country you’re interested in. This could be your own country or a foreign one.

2. Era: If you’ve already decided on the country and have begun to collect a few models that were in use in the past, then you’ll probably have a idea which up to which era you’ve managed to collect. Deciding on the era can allow you to focus on and complete one whole set as related to that time period. Take for instance World War I or World War II and try to collect all the models that might have been built or used by that specific country during the given era.

3. Scale: Last but certainly not the least, decide on the scale you’re looking for. Maybe you want all your military model airplanes to be of the scale. Contrarily, you might want to have them in different scales. This is a question you have to answer and then move ahead accordingly. Most manufacturing websites allow you to choose the scale of the models you intend to custom order.

I do believe that this method will give you a structured form in which to go about your hobby. It shouldn’t be difficult to follow it either, provided you have all the necessary information about the various military models that were built and put into use during the era of your choice.
