Scale Model Airplanes

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

If you’re reading this article, chances are you’ve either got a passion for scale model airplanes or you’ve never heard about them before and would like to find out more. I must say, I believe the former group to be larger one when it comes to the readership of this article.

Since we want to start right at the beginning, let’s begin by describing what the word ‘scale’ means within the context of model airplanes. Well, the whole term ‘scale model airplanes,’ makes it clear enough I hope that we’re discussing airplanes models that are made from plastic. These models are made to reflect the history of the military and aviation industries.

In order to create a model of any given military or other aircraft from the past, the first decision to be made is to do with scale. What size do you want your model to be in relation to the actual size of the aircraft in reality. This is always denoted by means of the ration system. Consider for example the ratio 1/50 – what this means is that your plastic model is fifty times smaller than the original.

By doing this you ensure that you have a set measurement of conversion. For instance if you decide to make a model that’s 48 times smaller than the original then according to your calculations every foot of the original will have to represented by ¼” of the model.

Today there’s a small but growing community of hobbyists that follow all the developments taking place on this front. This includes the manufacturing aspect as well as the building facet.

Take a look on the internet – a source that makes it possible to find just about anything – and you’ll notice that there are at least nine well known manufacturers of scale model airplanes. When I say, they manufacture them, I’m talking about both ready-made models as well as kits for you to have some hands-on fun yourself.

These models are made from a variety of materials ranging from plastic to wood, from polystyrene to fiberglass. The models once made may either be capable or flying or not. This feature is dependent on the construction of the model which differs based on whether or not you want your model to be worthy of flying.

There are those who enjoy this hobby as collectors and their only purpose is to find and add to their collection of various models of scaled airplanes. Obviously these are almost always static models. Then, there’s the other group that enjoys the act of building their own models either from scratch or from kits they buy online. This group consists of both static and flying model enthusiasts.

Whatever category you fall into, trust that there’re enough outlets on the internet that can cater to your wants. There are some websites and blogs as well that are maintained by professionals in this field some of whom take on orders for custom model airplanes in scales of your choice. Such blogs/websites also often offer tutorials on all aspects of this esoteric hobby.

Airflix Scale Model Airplanes

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

If you have to think about who started manufacturing scale model aircrafts in the UK then your answer undoubtedly will be Airfix. The Airfix scale model airplanes were the first of their kind in the UK and were made by Nicholas Kove in the year 1939. The reason why Nicholas Kove called his company and products Airfix is because almost all the products had a process which involved fixing air in the scale model aircraft.

The company really took off when Nicholas Kove was approached by a tractor manufacturer who wanted scale model tractors to promote his business; this idea was latched onto by producers of various vehicles and airlines. Soon they were selling different types of scale model vehicles.

One of the most famous Airfix product to-date is the Supermarine Spitfire which was made in 1955. At first when the product was made Nicholas Kove was afraid that it would be a flop but to his surprise the Spitfire was an instant success.

By the 1960’s and 1970’s the company was producing a whole range of products that had a regular demand. Apart from making Airfix scale model airplanes and tractors the company also manufactured trains, military vehicles, rockets, warships, modern and vintage cars, spaceships, motorcycles and many other similar products.

But as the company approached the 1980’s they were not very well prepared for the new computer gaming madness which was creeping into the market. The company soon went on a steep decline and declared bankruptcy. The Airfix Company was then bought over by General Mills. But only after a few years the General Mills Company sold Airfix to Hornby Hobbies Ltd. who still owns Airfix and all the Airfix scale model airplanes.

In 2003 the Airfix company was celebrating its 50th anniversary and during this event they released a special edtion of their most popular aircraft model which was the Supermarine Spitfire. The 1/72 Supermarine Spitfire kit came in an attractive blue plastic, it came along with an original plastic bag packaging and a large Series 5 stand.

The Airfix models have also featured in a few video games such as the Airfix Dogfighter in 2000 for MS.

The Gulfstream model airplanes are produced by the Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation which has its headquarters in Savannah, Georgia. The company produces a number of different jets for all sorts of clients which are from government to corporate to military to private customers all over the world. This model of airplane is extremely popular with the corporate industry and more than 25% of the Fortune 500 companies operate one of their models.

The company first appeared on the world aviation map in the year 1957 when the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Co. produced its first model named Gulfstream I, this model had a turboprop-drive design. This was its very first business aircraft as earlier the company had only dealt with military aircrafts.

After its initial success Grumman started working on a more business like model and came up with the Gulfstream II. This model was an instant hit and took the company to greater heights. It was one of the first turbojet-powered aircraft which was made exclusively for corporate use. The corporate world loved this and company started growing.

With the success of the Gulfstream II model the company separated its military aircraft section from the corporate section and a corporate aircraft building and testing center was built in Savannah in 1967. It first started with a hundred employees but the demand was so high that the work force was increased from a 100 to a 1000 employees in one year.

After almost 10 long years of producing the Gulfstream II, Grumman sold the company to American Jet Industries in 1978. The company was later renamed Gulfstream America. The new owner started pushing for more development on the Gulfstream II model and created the Gulfstream III in 1979. Learjet Model Airplane

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Ever wondered which companies design those fancy private jets that richest people on our planet fly, well one of those companies that makes business class jets for the civilian as well as military use is the company named Learjet. The Learjet model airplane was manufactured by William Powell Lear Jr. in the 1950’s and was part of the Swiss American Aviation Corporation. However, today the Learjet model airplane belongs to Bombardier and is part of the Bombardier Learjet Family.

The Learjet model airplane didn’t have a very successful start, at first it was designed to be a Swiss ground attack fighter aircraft but after its third prototype crashed orders that were placed for it were cancelled. However, the engineers went ahead and made to more Learjet model airplane prototypes and after the completion of the last prototype the production on these planes was stopped in 1960.

That is when Bill Lear saw this model and decided that they could perfectly suit the need for business class airplanes rather than fighter jets. He got a small team of engineer together and started work on the Learjet model airplane. They made a few changes to the design and started work on it in the city of Kansas. By 1963 the work was in full swing and that is when the Lear Jet Corporation was formed.

The first Learjet model was called the Learjet 23 which could take up to 6-8 passengers and it was first flown in the year 1963. The company then went through a number of different changes; one of the biggest was that it changed into a public owned corporation with Bill Lear holding 60% of the stakes.

After that the there were a number of different Learjet model airplanes that were produced from the first being the Learjet 23 to the latest which is called the Learjet 85, which can fly at a high speed of Mach 0.82 and range up to 3,000 nm or 5,556 km.

The only ever tragic incident which has occurred with this model is that in 1983 a Sri Lankan business tycoon was flying in this model from Malaysia to Sri Lanka and the plane blew up in mid air.

Concorde Model Airplane

Friday, April 9th, 2010

The Concorde model airplane was one of the most revolutionary airplane models that was ever launched in the 20th century. The plane cut short the travel time by half compared to a lot of other models of plane that were flying when the Concorde was launched.

Many people don’t know how the Concorde model airplane came into being. The model was a joint effort from the British and French manufacturers British Aircraft Corporation and Aérospatiale. After a lot of contemplation on designs and unique engineering models the two companies produced the Concorde in 1969 and was flown in the same year for the world to experience the fastest mode of transportation on our planet.

The Concorde regularly flew on the transatlantic route from London’s Heathrow airport to Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport to New York’s JFK airport and also to Washington’s Dulles airport. It was an instant hit as the travel time between these routes was cut into half and the idea of travelling at such high speeds really attracted a lot of people, it almost became a thing that most people had to do at least once in their lifetimes.

Some of the most interesting facts about the Concorde model airplane were that it could fly at the speed of 1,450 mph or 2,330 km/h with a minimum of 92 and maximum of 120 passengers on board. Its cruise speed was Mach 2.02 which is equivalent to 1,320 mph and its range was up to 3,900 nmi or 4,500 m or 7,250 km. However, because of the high speeds that it attained it also consumed a lot of gas, its consumption of fuel was 46.85 lb/mi.

After servicing people for a number of years the Concorde model airplane recorded its biggest ever crash on 25th July, 2000. The crash of the airplane Concorde 4590 happened in Gonesse, France which is on the outskirts of Paris. The plane crash killed all of its passengers and crew members on board bringing the death roll to a 109 death people.

After the crash the flights were put under test and returned to service in 2001 but it was later decided to retire the model and the last flight took place in the year 2003.

Model Airplane Plans and Guides

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

airplane guideBuilding and flying model airplanes is becoming increasingly popular nowadays and newer models are being launched fairly regularly. This has become the most sought after hobby now. The models range from the basic ones to the more complex one like the model jet airplanes. The models come in two varieties – Ready to Fly and Almost Ready to Fly. When buy a model of the 1st variety then there is really nothing to worry. You can just take it out from the box; attach the dismantled parts (if any) and let it fly. The ARF variety needs a little bit of building the airplane and it will take a minimum of 4 hrs to get the model ready. If the model is a complicated one then the time to build it will also increase.

These models are quite easy to build as the box comes with instruction manuals and all. But there are other aspects which require equal attention and a little bit of expertise. The areas of concern are – the first flight, radio control equipment, savos, batteries, glow engines, pulsejet and the turbines. You can follow the instruction manuals for these or you can follow the many guide books that are readily available in the market. These guides are also available in various blogs and the can also be bought from reputed websites such as www.amazon.com

There are a number of good books for this purpose. Gas Turbines for Model Aircraft by Kurt Schreckling is one of the best in the genre. It has received good reviews all over and is recommended for first timers. The book is written in a lucid manner and is also used by veterans of RC flying. There are lots of people who have abandoned RC flying as they get bored of the complex manuals, unlimited formulas and weird vocabulary. This is where the book scores over others. The book is low priced and comes in paperback edition. There are other similar titles which are good reference guides for RC model airplane flyers. Some of the notable books are Model Jet Engines by Thomas Kamps and RCadvisor’s Model Airplane Design Made Easy by Carlos Reyes.

Plastic Model Airplanes

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

plastic model airplanePlastic models are usually sold as kits which need to be assembled by the user. The plastic models are also known as scale models and they are mainly bought for static display. The majority of the plastic model airplanes are injection – molded in polystyrene, parts are attached together with the help of adhesive or white glue. You can even get special paints for application on these plastic models. Aircraft insignia and body decorations materials are also available and you can use them on your model to make it look more realistic.

There has been a trend among manufacturers to offer airplane kits which require less time and skill to assemble them. So now fully detailed kits have been launched for the benefit of the hobbyists. These kits require only normal assembly and gluing. Another type of kits is available wherein you just need to snap the different parts together and this requires even lesser time and skill.

Plastic models are designed in scale. Generally these models have full detailing and come in reasonable sizes. The most popular scales that are available for plastic model aircrafts are 1/24, 1/32, 1/48, 1/72, 1/100 and 1/144. Of these 1/48 and 1/72 sell the most worldwide.

The flip side of plastic models is that the high cost of production. Resin castings are used on models but when the models become larger in size the cost too goes up considerably. Vacuum forming was once popular but the assembly is very difficult. Very recently the manufacturers have started producing models that have very fine detailing that are perfect for resin kits. The reason behind the sale of plastic model airplanes has changed over the years. Earlier these were sold as toys to young boys but now they are mainly purchased to be kept as collectibles. Technology too has advanced a great deal and the models that come out now are highly sophisticated compared to the older models. This has also raised the price of the kits by several notches but that cannot be helped really in this age of competition.

The first plastic model airplanes came into existence in the 1930s’ and these were manufactured by Frog in the UK. A decade later several US companies like Hawk, Renwal and Lindberg joined the bandwagon and began to produce plastic model airplanes. From 1950s the big players came into picture such as the Auror4a, Revell, AMT and Monogram in US, Airfix in UK and Heller SA in France. It was only in the 1970s that plastic model airplanes became increasingly popular in Asian countries and manufacturers began to rise from this region too. Hasegawa and Tamiya from Japan, DML, AFV Club and Trumpeter from China have started dominated the market with newer technologies. Nowadays you also get brands from Russia, Central Europe and Korea stacked up in the local toy stores.

Needless to say these models have carved a niche for itself and have adorned the house of many as collector’s items. The cost will always be a factor for the common people but with passing time and better technology these models whould be within the affordable range of the consumers.
